The International Green Gown Awards recognise, celebrate and showcase exceptional sustainability initiatives from tertiary education institutions around the world.

Established in 2014 and supported by the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), the awards have become one of the most prestigious recognitions of leading sustainability practice in education in the world. 

Green Gown

The International Green Gown Awards are delivered by EAUC, and are supported by Australasian Campuses Towards Sustainability (ACTS), International Association of Universities (IAU) and the Higher Education Sustainability Initiative (HESI).

The ethos of the International Green Gown Awards is to ensure the lessons and examples of best practice are shared within the sector and beyond across the world.

Eligibility

The International Green Gown Awards are open to tertiary education institutions outside the UK, Ireland and Australasia.

This includes, but is not limited to, institutions such as: 

  • universities
  • colleges or TVETs
  • adult learning providers
  • technical or research institutions
  • learning and skills institutions 

If your institution is based in the UK, Ireland or Australasia, you can apply through the UK and Ireland or Australasia regional programmes. 

Entry is free of charge with a suggested donation of $150 USD if your institution is able to contribute.

Application Process

The International Green Gowns Awards application process consists of two stages: 

Stage 1

  • Institutions are invited to submit an initial application by 10 April
  • Following assessment by the judges, we will announce a shortlist of finalists on 4 June

Stage 2

  • If you project has reached the final, we will contact you in early June to ask you to submit additional information
  • A further round of judging will take place to decide the winners.
  • The winners will be announced the week beginning 7 September
