Accra, Ghana, September 16, 2024 – Farm Radio International (FRI), a leading non-profit organization dedicated to promoting agricultural and rural development, has issued a passionate call for urgent, coordinated efforts to curb the destructive activities of illegal miners, locally known as “galamsey,” in Ghana.

The organization highlights the alarming effects of illegal mining on the environment and the livelihoods of rural communities, particularly small-scale farmers. In a press statement released today, Farm Radio International warned of the devastating consequences galamsey activities are having on the country’s water bodies, arable lands, and agricultural sustainability.

“The activities of illegal miners have reached a crisis point where the lives of citizens and the nation’s food security are being threatened,” stated Benjamin Fiafor, the Ghana Country Representative for Farm Radio International. “Water bodies are polluted beyond treatment due to residues of heavy metals, farmlands are left barren, and aquatic life is being wiped out.”

Farm Radio International, which engages extensively with rural communities through radio programs, expressed deep concern over the long-term impact of these illegal mining activities on food security and agricultural resilience. The group noted that the pollution caused by galamsey not only devastates lands and rivers but also jeopardizes the livelihoods of farmers, who form the backbone of the nation’s food system.

“Our farmers play an essential role in Ghana’s food systems, and their future must be protected. The pollution of rivers and destruction of farmlands has resulted in lost livelihoods and a significant threat to the country’s agricultural sustainability,” Fiafor added.

Farm Radio International has called on the government, civil society, the media, and all stakeholders to take immediate action to halt the illegal mining operations and enforce stricter environmental laws. The organization also urged the provision of sustainable livelihood alternatives for those involved in illegal mining to safeguard the environment and ensure agricultural resilience.

The organization reaffirmed its commitment to supporting agricultural communities in their efforts to preserve their lands, and expressed its willingness to work with partners to promote environmental protection and sustainable agricultural practices.
