Vegetable farmer wins Miss Agriculture 2019

A vegetable farmer in Ahwerem, a farming community in the Ashanti Region, Margaret Afriyie, has been crowned the 2019 Miss Agriculture queen.

Margaret Afriyie, also known as ‘Midwife Farmer’, is a midwife and she beat thirteen other ladies to win the crown and a cash prize.

 

The grand finale of the Miss Agriculture project pageant took place at the MJ Grand Hotel on Saturday, November 9.

Portia Mensah Bonsu (an extension officer and cocoa farmer) and Edwina Anaba (a palm kennel oil producer) won the first and second runners-up respectively.

Eleven other contestants, before the grand finale on Saturday, were for weeks taken through rigorous grooming sessions on entrepreneurship, financial empowerment, industrial trip, communication skills, personal outlook and other projects.

Contestants each week had a task to fulfil in other to survive eviction.

 

On the final day, 14 contestants battled it out as they shared agricultural projects they in intend to embark on should they win the ultimate crown.

 

The judges, Paulina Addy (WIAD-MoFA), Ligaya Diaz (USDA Amplifies Ghana), Sir Laud Aikins (ghsell.com) and Nana Kojo Ghansah (Pamhy3bykojo) ad Mr Michael Boateng (Giz) watched keenly as the 14 finalists took turns to share their ideas and answer questions thrown at them.

 

Emmanuella, a student of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) was crowned “Obaasima 2019” and Most Eloquent contestant while Emilia, an integrated pig farmer, won the Most Disciplined contestant.

Anaba the 2nd Runner up was announced the Best Talent as Portia the 1st Runner up as Most Influential.

Abena, a horticulturist and contestant, was also voted by the delegates as Miss Congeniality. This award was given to the contestant who was most fun to be with.

Sponsors for this year were: GHsell.com, Empire State Hotel, Kusaka Restaurant, Casa de Ropa, Amplifies Ghana, MBC Africa and Bel-aqua Mineral Water and beverages with support from the  Women in Agricultural Development under the Ministry of Food and Agriculture.
