The leaderships of the Christian Council of Ghana (CCG) and the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference (GCBC) have asked all pastors to seriously commit to the Green Ghana programme slated for June 10, 2022.

They have also encouraged their Member Churches to set similar targets for planting trees.

“Where possible, we encourage our churches to mobilise themselves on June 10, 2022 to embark on this project,”they added.

A statement jointly signed by Rev. Dr. Justice Adjei K. Lawson, Vice Chairman, CCG; Rev Dr Cyril G. K. Fayose, General Secretary, CCG; Most Rev. Philip Naameh, President, GCBC; Rev. Fr. Lazarus Anondee, Secretary General, GCBC, commended President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for his commitment to continue the Green Ghana Programme.

It said reports indicated that between 1990 and 2010, Ghana lost about 33.7 per cent of its forest cover to galamsey, farming and illegal logging.

The statement said the devastation caused to Ghana’s forests leading to its rapid depletion was not a good story for the country.

It observed that the country’s forests provided livelihood for majority of Ghana’s population.

The statement called on the Forestry Commission to be supportive and facilitate the execution of the Green Ghana agenda.

“It has the potential to reverse the dreadful loss to our forest cover while contributing to mitigating climate change impact in Ghana,” it said.

The statement commended the Ghana Health Service and the Government of Ghana for the efforts put into the mobilisation of resources and public education to help fight the Covid-19 pandemic.

It appealed to President Akufo-Addo to establish an emergency committee that would swiftly deal with any such pandemic in the future.

The statement urged citizens to continue to observe the Covid-19 hygienic protocols.

“Let us continue to wear our face masks, observe social distancing, wash our hands regularly under running water with soap and use the hand sanitizer frequently. We also entreat all Ghanaians to avail themselves for the Covid vaccination to protect themselves and others,” the statement said.
