The Vice of Polymateria Ltd, a dynamic scale-up within Imperial College London’s innovation hub, Dr. Florence Huynh has been awarded the Royal Society of Chemistry’s Rising Star in Industry Prize for her groundbreaking work developing biotransformation technology that could help address the global plastic pollution crisis.

The prestigious award, worth £3,000, was announced in a press release by the Royal Society of Chemistry, recognizing Dr. Huynh’s revolutionary “self-destructing plastic” technology that enables plastics to fully biodegrade within two years when exposed to natural elements, leaving no microplastics or toxic substances behind.

“I’m honoured and deeply grateful to receive this award. It’s wonderful recognition of the interdisciplinary work I’ve had the chance to pursue, and a testament to the incredible colleagues, mentors and collaborators who have inspired and supported me. This prize motivates me even more to continue bridging science and innovation to address urgent global challenges.” said Dr. Huynh.

The Chief Executive of the Royal Society of Chemistry, Dr Helen Pain said: “Our prize winners come from a vast array of backgrounds, all contributing in different ways to our knowledge base, and bringing fresh ideas and innovations. We recognise chemical scientists from every career stage and every role type, including those who contribute to the RSC’s work as volunteers.”

The Royal Society of Chemistry’s recognition carries significant weight—the organization’s prizes have celebrated excellence in chemical sciences for over 150 years, with 60 past winners going on to receive Nobel Prizes.

Global Impact of Polymateria’s Innovation.

This innovation directly tackles the mounting worldwide crisis where an estimated 400 million tons of plastic waste are produced annually, with millions of tons eventually reaching our oceans. The technology offers particular promise for regions where waste management infrastructure is still developing, working effectively in natural conditions without requiring specialized processing facilities.

Proven Technology

Unlike earlier biodegradable technologies criticized for creating harmful microplastics, Polymateria’s biotransformation technology meets the rigorous BSI PAS 9017 standard and has been successfully implemented across multiple continents since its commercial launch in 2019.

The award highlights how innovative scientific research can provide practical solutions to environmental challenges that transcend borders, offering hope for a more sustainable approach to plastic use on a global scale.
