Mr. Owusu Banahene, the Sunyani Municipal Director of Agriculture, stated that the directorate will receive 80,000 hybrid coconut seedlings for distribution to registered coconut farmers to enhance coconut production in the municipality.
He said the distribution of the seedlings aligned with the implementation of the government’s Presidential Initiatives in Agriculture and Agribusiness (PIAA) programme launched by the President in 2025.
In an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Sunyani, Mr Banahene explained that PIAA, with funding from the Ghana Exim Bank, was being implemented by the Ghana Coconut Federation (CocoFeG).
He said the programme aimed at expanding agriculture and agribusiness, creating jobs, improving livelihoods as well as increasing national production to widen the nation’s coconut export earnings.
Mr Banahene said many coconut farmers had shown interest in the PIAA, saying that Directorate received 20,000 hybrid and Malaysian dwarf seedlings in 2025, and distributed them to about 156 registered farmers.
He said land was not a problem adding that hundreds of acres of land had been prepared for cultivation in the municipality, hoping to receive the seedlings from the Ministry of Agriculture (MoFA).
Mr Banahene said the COCOFeG was facilitating so that the directorate would receive and distribute the coconut seedlings to the farmers to plant them at the time of the season.
He called on the various Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies to ensure that lands reserved for the plantation of the seedlings were not encroached.
