The Vice of Polymateria Ltd, a dynamic scale-up within Imperial College London’s innovation hub, Dr. Florence Huynh has been awarded the Royal Society of Chemistry’s Rising Star in Industry Prize for her groundbreaking work developing biotransformation technology that could help address the global plastic pollution crisis.
The prestigious award, worth £3,000, was announced in a press release by the Royal Society of Chemistry, recognizing Dr. Huynh’s revolutionary “self-destructing plastic” technology that enables plastics to fully biodegrade within two years when exposed to natural elements, leaving no microplastics or toxic substances behind.

“I’m honoured and deeply grateful to receive this award. It’s wonderful recognition of the interdisciplinary work I’ve had the chance to pursue, and a testament to the incredible colleagues, mentors and collaborators who have inspired and supported me. This prize motivates me even more to continue bridging science and innovation to address urgent global challenges.” said Dr. Huynh.

Unlike earlier biodegradable technologies criticized for creating harmful microplastics, Polymateria’s biotransformation technology meets the rigorous BSI PAS 9017 standard and has been successfully implemented across multiple continents since its commercial launch in 2019.
