The Northern Region has seen some 250,000 trees planted to mark the Green Ghana Project that seeks to plant five million trees to restore the country’s vegetative cover. The trees planted include nim, mango, acacia Shea, rosewood and baobab.

The initiative forms part of the efforts by the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources (MLNR) and the Forestry Commission to encourage Ghanaians to plant more trees to preserve and protect the country’s forest cover and the environment in general.

The exercise brought together stakeholders from the government, faith-based organizations, school children, non-governmental organsiation as well as some residents to plants across the municipalities and their vicinities.

The Over Lord of Dagbon Ya-Na Abukari II, who was joined by government officials to embark on the exercise in Yendi Municipality of the Northern Region to plant the seedlings. He encouraged the residents to take good care of the seedlings to grow to achieve its purpose and also avoid the illegal cutting of the trees and also desist from the bush burning activities that affect the vegetation cover.

Alhaji Shani Alhassan Saibu, Northern Regional Minister said, the planting of the seedlings in the region would go a long way to reduce the heat experienced in the region, enhance agriculture as well as provide good air to the people.
